Moving With Your Pet

One day you decide to relocate from UK to another country and you start to prepare for relocating.  But what to do if you have a pet? You won't leave it; you'll take it with you and your family. There are increasingly more options available to those people who consider their pet part of the family. Dependent on the country you're moving to, taking your pet with you when you emigrate can vary tremendously.

Relocating With Your Pet Within the EU
Moving from the UK to anywhere in Europe, you have to pay attention to some mandatory aspects. Your pet must be micro chipped, inoculated against rabies and in some cases be given a 'fit to fly' guarantee by your vet. But there are a few exceptions to this rule and certain countries such as Sweden and Cyprus also require extra vaccinations. Your pet will also be required to have a blood test 30 days after the rabies injection if you intend to return to the UK.

Crossing the Atlantic With Your Pet
It is now far easier to take your pet with you when you go. USA and Canada are required to have the same vaccinations as if they were travelling within Europe. And there is a chance that they may be given rabies shot when they arrive in either the USA or Canada, but other than this, there’s little stress involved. However, many flights now allow owners to simply carry their pet with them as extra baggage for a reasonably low price. Thus, you can simply book your pets travel in advance and they will be placed in the air-conditioned hold when you board the plane.

Long Haul Journeys and Your Pet
The rules are different when taking your pet with you when moving to a far away country such as Australia that remains a rabies free country and therefore a quarantine period is required when your animal arrives there. Your beloved cat or dog will spend one month in one of the quarantine stations in Australia - located in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

It is important to obtain both an import and export permit for your animal when leaving the UK. You can obtain it from the relevant authorities in both the UK and Australia. Your animal will receive numerous injections before being deemed fit to fly by the vet. Then your pet will travel to Australia where it will be picked up by AQIS who will transport it to the quarantine station for the month.

Moving to Difficult Countries
Some countries established strict rules and it is not easy to take your pet with you. Such countries as China are highly regarded as countries that are best avoided. Moving to such country, you have to contact the local government authority to ask for further advice.
