Immigrating to Canada from the UK, you must be aware of the customs regulations that apply.
Duty free entry to Canada is granted provided either: a) you are taking up residency and have owned and used the effects immediately prior to moving from the UK to Canada; b) you are a returning Canadian and have been away from the country for over 12 months (the exceptions being on any new or single items with a value of over $10,000 which will incur duty calculated on the value - proof of purchase is required).
It is required to attend a meeting with local customs where you will need to present your passport and complete the necessary customs forms in order to obtain Customs Clearance.
It is important to clear all shipments through Customs when entering Canada. Complete and sign a packing list or inventory before clearing the shipment.
Not all items are allowed to bring with you in Canada. The following articles are prohibited: firearms (including air, gas, and starting pistols), gun replicas, fireworks, explosives, narcotics, drugs, incitements, food, alcohol and paint in both sea and air freight consignments. All gas bottles for diving tanks, gas stoves and barbeques etc must be empty and free of gas. Garden implements, outdoor furniture, golf clubs, tents, camping equipment, barbeques, shoes, bicycles, buggies/prams need to be cleaned thoroughly and be free of dirt, soil, grass, food etc.
The following documents are needed for landed immigrants (settlers) to take to customs: original passport, copy of shipping manifest, complete copy of inventory, B4form and file number issued by customs at time of settler's arrival in Canada, immigration paperwork.
Customs Prescriptions Duty free under the following conditions:
SETTLERS (immigrants) Goods and automobiles were owned and in possession and use in the former country of domicile prior direct removal from that country.
FORMER RESIDENTS They resume residence after an absence of not less than one year.
